American Media Drives 34% Increase in In-App Purchases with Localytics Messaging

American Media Inc. (AMI) is a major magazine publisher with a portfolio of brands and a dozen apps, including Muscle & Fitness, that monetize via advertising and in‑app purchases. Facing the challenge that mobile banner ads often degrade user experience and engagement, AMI needed a way to offer mobile advertising placements while improving conversion rates and session quality.

Using Localytics’ analytics and Messaging platform, AMI ran targeted push and in‑app messages—partnering with an advertiser to promote a sponsored free issue—to drive users into the app and into the issue library. In the 10 days after the campaigns launched, subscription purchases rose 40% and issue purchases rose 29%, for a 34% aggregate increase in in‑app purchases; average session length increased 23%, median session length rose 53%, and the share of sessions over three minutes climbed from 27% to 33%.
