Case Study: CarbonStack boosts transparent carbon offset monitoring with UP42 satellite imagery

A UP42 Case Study

Preview of the CarbonStack Case Study

CarbonStack uses high resolution satellite imagery to offset CO2 emissions

CarbonStack, a company that accelerates carbon neutrality through local afforestation projects, faced the challenge of needing a more cost-effective and flexible method to monitor the impact of their forests. Their previous use of drone and aerial imagery was limited in both scope and resolution, and they sought greater transparency for their clients in the carbon offsetting market. CarbonStack turned to vendor UP42 and its high-resolution Pléiades Neo satellite imagery to address this.

The solution from UP42 provided CarbonStack with detailed 30cm resolution imagery, accessible via a centralized storage platform, which enabled them to clearly identify and monitor individual trees across Europe. By applying a machine learning algorithm to this data, they could measure carbon uptake by species and growth stage. This allowed CarbonStack to analyze over 1.5 million trees, saving them significant time and money compared to previous methods. The data also feeds into their public blockchain ledger, bringing unprecedented transparency to their operations and demonstrating tangible local impact for their clients.
