Ur-cobot Performs Screw Driving at Opel’s Engine Assembly Line, Improving Ergonomics While Expanding Expertise in Automation Technology

Opel, the automotive manufacturer, wanted to relieve assembly staff from a repetitive and ergonomically demanding task on its engine line at the Eisenach plant. To explore automation with collaborative robots, Opel worked with Universal Robots and introduced a UR10 cobot for pilot use in engine assembly.

Universal Robots implemented a UR10 application that tightens three screws on aircon compressors mounted to engine blocks, working safely alongside employees in a stop-and-go cycle. The cobot handles up to 30 engines per hour, across as many as seven engine types, and delivers precise torque at 22 Newton meters while reducing strain on workers and supporting future automation initiatives at Opel.
