Universal Robots Automates Small Batch Welding at Montana Solar

MT Solar, a U.S. manufacturer of solar mounting structures, faced a 300% seasonal surge in demand and severe welding labor shortages. Lead times were stretching to two to three times normal, and the company needed a flexible automation solution for its high-mix, low-volume production. Universal Robots was identified as the vendor behind the cobot-based approach, using a UR10e collaborative robot with a Vectis Cobot Welding Tool.

Universal Robots helped MT Solar automate MIG welding of small-batch parts with a UR10e cobot that could run safely alongside employees, be programmed through an intuitive teach pendant, and quickly switch between jobs. The system enabled MT Solar to keep up with demand without adding extra staff, free employees from repetitive welding, improve consistency and quality, and achieve an estimated ROI of 16–24 months on hard labor savings.
