A Universal Robots Case Study
Gentofte Hospital, part of Copenhagen University Hospital in Gentofte, Denmark, needed a cost-efficient way to automate the manual sorting and handling of blood samples in a space-constrained lab. Faced with a 20% increase in incoming samples and a goal of delivering 90% of results within one hour, the hospital turned to Universal Robots and its UR5 collaborative robots.
Universal Robots implemented two UR5 cobots: one for picking, barcode scanning, and sorting samples into racks by cap color, and a second for loading the racks into the analyzer feed for centrifugation and testing. The solution processes about 3,000 samples per day, or 7–8 tubes per minute, helped the lab maintain on-time performance without adding staff, and enabled more than 90% of results to be ready in under an hour.
