THEMAGIC5, a company producing custom-fit swim goggles, faced the challenge of scaling its mass customization process to make personalized products affordable for everyday swimmers. Their goal was to automate the final, precise trimming of goggle gaskets based on individual 3D face scans, a task that was difficult to scale efficiently. They turned to vendor Universal Robots for a solution.

Universal Robots implemented a UR3e collaborative robot to execute unique, non-repetitive cuts for each customer. This solution allowed THEMAGIC5 to produce over 30 custom goggles per hour per robot, scale production rapidly by adding new cobots in 48 hours, and deliver a custom-fit product at an affordable price point. The UR3e cobots have proven extremely reliable, with the oldest unit operating non-stop for over seven years, enabling THEMAGIC5 to sell over 400,000 goggles worldwide.
