Robots Provide Glass Manufacturer With A Clear Competitive Edge

Gern Glas, one of Scandinavia’s largest suppliers of plane glass and mirrors for the furniture, kitchen, building, and solar industries, needed a way to stay competitive despite pressure from lower-cost suppliers and the strain of monotonous manual tasks on employees. Universal Robots provided collaborative robots, including the UR5 and UR10, to help modernize the production line.

Universal Robots implemented UR5 and UR10 cobots to automate glass loading, sandblasting, and gluing, improving flow into the high-energy tempering process and reducing bottlenecks. The result was more efficient use of capacity, less repetitive work for employees, and the ability to temper more glass using the same electricity, with a reported payback period of 6 to 12 months.
