New Robot Precision-Handles Tiny Hearing Aid Components

Oticon, the hearing aid manufacturer, needed a more flexible automation solution as its hearing aid components became increasingly small and production processes changed often. Its existing two- and three-axis robots could no longer handle the tiny, millimeter-sized parts with the precision and lateral movement required. Universal Robots supplied the UR5 collaborative robot to meet these challenges.

Universal Robots implemented the UR5 to suction and remove up to four delicate plastic components at once from injection moulds, using six-axis movement for precise tilting and rotation. The robot was easy to reprogram by technical staff, supported flexible small-batch production, and delivered safe, collaborative operation. Oticon reported a payback period of 60 days, with cycle times of just four to seven seconds depending on the job.
