UCS with Samba 4 Supports Windows Workstations with Various Specialist Applications

The Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz, a federal authority with about 750 employees across nine locations in Germany, needed a way to manage a distributed IT environment with ease and flexibility while also ensuring georedundancy, high availability, and support for both Windows workstations and specialist applications. With Univention, it sought a Linux-based alternative that could avoid the cost and complexity of replacing its server landscape with Windows.

Univention implemented Univention Corporate Server (UCS) with Samba 4 for central identity management, file and print services, DNS/DHCP, and support for Windows clients. The solution enabled replicated directory services, decentralized email handling, and strong support for existing Windows and open source systems, improving stability and simplifying administration across all sites. The migration of all six sites to UCS 3.1 reportedly took less than a day and a half, while the customer also reported that Univention’s support made the transition smooth and successful.
