The Österreichische Bundesverlag (öbv), a major Austrian educational publisher, faced challenges with its aging Microsoft Exchange system which had reached its capacity limit. Seeking a scalable, open-source groupware solution to improve performance and avoid vendor lock-in, öbv partnered with vendor Univention to find a modern replacement for email, calendar, and communication tools.

Univention provided a solution using its Corporate Server (UCS) for central identity management and the Kopano groupware suite to replace MS Exchange. The migration was smooth, resulting in a stable and high-performing system with lower total cost of ownership. The customer reported that their five-year TCO was significantly lower than a comparable Microsoft system, and the new open system provided greater flexibility and choice for each component.
