Landesmedienzentrum Baden-Württemberg - Customer Case Study

Landesmedienzentrum Baden-Württemberg (LMZ) supports school networks and IT services for more than 550 schools in Baden-Württemberg. It needed a flexible, future-proof school IT platform that could handle expanded network infrastructures, multi-server and multi-school operation, support current Windows desktops, enable teacher control features, and integrate student devices such as smartphones. Univention’s UCS@school and Univention Corporate Server were chosen as the basis for the new paedML Linux 6.0 solution.

Univention implemented a complete Open Source school IT package built around UCS@school, with Samba 4 for Windows integration, pfSense for firewalling, opsi for software distribution, and BackupPC for backups. The solution was rolled out to over 120 schools within a year of release, with 40 more in testing and 70 planned to switch, while schools also benefited from automatic updates, simpler administration, and reduced support needs.
