German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence - Customer Case Study

The German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), a research institute with 800 employees across six sites in Germany, needed a modern IT infrastructure to centralize administration, preserve user and rights management, and migrate a 15-year email archive without disruption. Its previous setup ran all systems on a single server and used an unmaintained operating system, creating a major challenge for communication and ongoing management. Univention provided the platform and support needed to address these issues.

Univention implemented a new infrastructure based on four virtual servers using vSphere, with Univention Corporate Server (UCS) for central identity and IT management, Active Directory Connector for synchronizing directory services, and Open-Xchange plus Oxtender for groupware and mobile access. The migration was completed smoothly and quickly, with all data and resources centrally administered and staff able to communicate more efficiently. The result was a stable, up-to-date system that met the organization’s growth needs and enabled DFKI to handle updates itself, with support still available from Univention and partners.
