Shentel, a mid‑Atlantic telecommunications provider offering voice, video and data services, was protecting a complex environment that included 300+ virtualized Windows servers, physical Linux servers and critical applications (Exchange, SQL, SharePoint). The company relied on aging Veritas NetBackup running on an old physical server with LTO tape backups and expired support, creating reliability and recovery challenges that required a fast replacement.

Shentel deployed two Unitrends Recovery Series 944S appliances and two removable‑media archive devices, configured across its two datacenters with cross‑replication. The new solution delivered automated ransomware detection, much faster backup and restore times, and quick recovery of both single files and entire VMs (an application server was restored in about 15 minutes), improving uptime, admin efficiency and user satisfaction.
