A Unitrends Case Study
The Central Florida Regional Transportation Authority (LYNX) — the public bus system serving greater Orlando — struggled with a time-consuming, costly backup process that relied on ARCserve and LTO tape libraries stored off-site to meet Florida’s climate-controlled retention requirements. Limited IT resources and low fare revenues made it difficult to manage tape creation and recovery: staff spent many hours weekly on backups and more than two hours handling individual recoveries.
LYNX deployed Unitrends Recovery Series appliances with RXDA rotational media (initially 713s in 2013, upgraded to 8032S in 2019), enabling fast file-level restores, automatic replication to a remote site, the ability to run production workloads on the appliance, and cloud readiness. The change cut backup administration time dramatically, enabled daily incremental and full SQL backups, delivered near-instant recoveries for deleted data, provided ransomware detection, and preserved compliance with physical media requirements.
