Enterprise-class Data Protection at School District Budgets

Griffin-Spalding County School System, a public district south of Atlanta with 21 K–12 schools, roughly 11,000 students and 850 teachers, relied on an unreliable tape-based backup that left its 37 servers and 1.2 TB of data vulnerable. After Hurricane Katrina underscored the risk of permanent data loss, the district’s IT director needed an affordable, enterprise-class backup and disaster-recovery solution that fit a tight school budget.

The district deployed Unitrends Recovery Series appliances, using bare-metal recovery to shorten backup and restore windows, enable quick restores, and perform hardware upgrades offline without taking the network down. The solution added on- and off-site vaulting and selective encryption for regulatory compliance, improving protection of student records and education applications while delivering easier maintenance and faster recovery.
