A Unitrends Case Study
Altarum Institute, a non-profit health systems research and consulting organization based in Ann Arbor with remote offices across the U.S., needed to protect 1–1.5 TB of process and research data per site. Their previous Symantec tape-based approach proved slow, unreliable and costly (including off-site tape shipping), making it difficult to meet backup windows and ensure consistent protection across nationwide locations.
Altarum replaced tapes with Unitrends disk‑based Recovery Appliances and Enterprise Backup, using peer-site storage so each location can back up to another without remote tape libraries. The new solution delivered faster, more reliable backups and rapid bare‑metal and virtual restores, simplified management with graphical reporting and drag‑and‑drop scheduling, and eliminated tape logistics — restoring confidence and meeting backup windows.
