United Rentals provided a hybrid battery energy storage system (BESS) for JE Dunn Construction to sustainably power a 24-trailer compound on a data center project. The challenge was to avoid running diesel generators constantly to meet aggressive project sustainability goals while providing reliable power for offices and equipment before grid connection was available.

The solution paired a 500kW BESS unit with a downsized generator to create a hybrid system. Over seven months, United Rentals' implementation cut generator run time by 85%, reduced fuel consumption by over 54,000 gallons, and eliminated 464 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions, while also reducing maintenance and noise.
