The District School Board of Collier County Virtualizes Desktop Project with UDT

Collier County Public Schools, one of Florida’s largest and most geographically dispersed districts, needed a more reliable and cost-effective way to refresh and support more than 20,000 desktops across 44 schools. Working with United Data Technologies (UDT), the district looked beyond traditional PC replacement and explored a virtual desktop approach that could better leverage its new high-speed fiber network.

United Data Technologies implemented a virtualized desktop environment using VMware ESX on HP BL35P blade servers, HP Remote Graphics Software, and Softricity SoftGrid, with Vmotion Technology for failover. The solution delivered 12 virtual desktops per ESX server, centralized 6,000 desktop images, and removed the single point of failure found in earlier thin-client models, while improving reliability, reducing on-site support, and eliminating the need to replace user PCs every three years.
