Groundbreaking Wireless Project Transports Hart Transit Fleet into the Future

Hillsborough Area Regional Transit (HART), the public transit provider for Hillsborough County, Florida, wanted to move away from magnetic strip fare media and build a mobile wireless infrastructure to support 187 buses across a 1,000-square-mile service area. The goal was to enable smart card payments and other connected services such as bus location, diagnostics, and Wi‑Fi, but the fleet included many different vehicle types, making the project complex. United Data Technologies (UDT) was brought in to help design and implement the solution.

UDT deployed a connected transit solution using Cisco Mobility Router Solutions, OpenDNS, Prime Management Software, and Verizon LTE connectivity, while also using its Orlando configuration center to receive, configure, store, and deliver equipment for a phased rollout. The project took just under 12 months and enabled more than 30 riders per bus to connect to the Internet, compared with six to eight on similar installations. It also created a foundation for smart card fare processing, mobile disaster recovery use, and improved vehicle location and maintenance capabilities.
