NHS Trust Adapts Faster to Healthcare Change with Unit4 FP&A

Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (BHFT), formed by the merger of Luton & Dunstable and Bedford hospitals, serves roughly 700,000 people with over 1,100 inpatient beds and 8,500 staff. The enlarged Trust inherited vast amounts of financial data and ageing, spreadsheet-based budgeting systems that were slow, error-prone and unable to provide the real-time, consistent view needed for complex NHS planning.

BHFT implemented Unit4 Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) to centralize data, automate budgeting and enable collaborative forecasting. The platform shortened planning cycles, lets multiple users work simultaneously, and provides dashboarded insight across actuals, plans and forecasts — saving around three weeks on budget setting and at least one week on forecasting — and helping the Trust respond quickly to fast-changing healthcare conditions.
