Fifth Third Bank Secures Sensitive Data in the Cloud

Fifth Third Bank, a major U.S. financial institution, began modernizing its data infrastructure and moving to the cloud while needing to keep credit card numbers and other PII secure. The bank needed stronger end-to-end protection than transport encryption alone, plus strict data segregation and PCI DSS compliance, all without breaking critical application functionality. Unbound Security’s tokenization approach was used to help address these cloud security and compliance challenges.

Using Unbound CORE, Unbound Security enabled Fifth Third Bank to tokenize sensitive data with a fast integration API and minimal impact on existing databases. The solution logically and physically separated data by environment, data type, and privilege, while applying different keys and access controls to ensure only authorized users could detokenize information. This improved security for cloud and future container-based applications, reduced exposure to third parties, and helped meet regulatory requirements, though the case study does not provide specific quantitative results.
