University of Florida Transportation Institute improves wildfire evacuation analysis for the 2019 Kincade Fire with Unacast

The University of Florida Transportation Institute (UFTI) sought to analyze human mobility patterns to better understand evacuation behaviors during natural disasters, specifically studying the area affected by the Kincade, California wildfires. To meet this challenge, UFTI collaborated with Unacast to access and utilize its location analytics data.

By working with Unacast, UFTI researchers gained access to detailed human mobility data that showed movement into and out of evacuation zones and the timing of these movements. This solution provided UFTI with a new methodology to analyze evacuation decisions, which helps emergency managers refine disaster response strategies and enables planners to create targeted outreach to better prepare vulnerable communities and reduce hazard impacts.
