NAVFAC inventories 30,000 acres with Ultrasystems Environmental

Ultrasystems Environmental was contracted by NAVFAC to fulfill the Navy's compliance responsibilities under the National Historic Preservation Act. The challenge was to conduct a comprehensive inventory of cultural resource sites across a vast, one-million-acre area at Naval Air Weapons Station – China Lake, the largest such installation in the nation.

The solution implemented by Ultrasystems involved a detailed cultural resource pedestrian survey covering 30,000 acres. Their team meticulously recorded each site with written descriptions, artifact lists, photographs, and sub-meter accuracy GPS mapping, collecting only diagnostic or unique items. Through this work, Ultrasystems provided NAVFAC with the critical inventory needed to manage and preserve these cultural resources effectively.
