Urban Scale Interventions 3D printing sustainable lighting installations

Urban Scale Interventions (USI), an architecture firm, faced the challenge of transforming fragmented and historically significant urban alleyways in Belfast. They needed to create a unified, sustainable, and engaging lighting solution that would improve safety and celebrate the area's history. Partnering with UltiMaker, they utilized 3D printing technology to address this complex urban design problem.

Using UltiMaker 3D printers and a translucent recycled PETG filament, USI manufactured 43 custom 'ocean orbs' for a suspended lighting installation. This UltiMaker solution provided the design flexibility, material efficiency, and cost-effective in-house production capability needed to bring the vision to life. The results were a successful interactive light and soundscape that created a new social focal point, enhanced the visitor experience, and transformed a previously underused space into a popular destination.
