NavVis Rapid prototyping wearable scanners with 3D printing

NavVis, a company specializing in indoor mapping technology, faced the challenge of designing the ergonomic and highly accurate NavVis VLX wearable scanner. They needed to rapidly prototype complex parts to test sensor positioning, user accessibility, and comfort without the long lead times of traditional manufacturing. To achieve this, they turned to their in-house UltiMaker 3D printers for rapid prototyping.

Using UltiMaker 3D printers and Ultimaker Cura software, the NavVis team implemented a rapid prototyping solution. This allowed for a 24-hour iteration cadence, enabling them to quickly validate designs for critical components like the shoulder pads and touchscreen mount. The reliability and remote monitoring capabilities of the UltiMaker S5 were particularly crucial for maintaining this workflow during COVID-19 restrictions. The result was the successful on-time launch of the scanner, with UltiMaker's technology enabling significant cost savings by avoiding five-week lead times for metal parts and allowing for continuous product improvement.
