UL Solutions Helps Build Safety with 3D Printed Technology

Mighty Buildings, an Oakland-based construction technology company, faced the challenge of confirming the safety and building code compliance of its novel 3D printed homes. As a new technology, government regulations had yet to catch up, requiring a rigorous evaluation process to build trust with the conservative construction industry and meet stringent codes, especially in their home state of California. They partnered with UL Solutions for its safety testing and certification expertise.

The solution was the development of UL 3401, the Outline of Investigation for 3D Printed Building Construction, which UL Solutions created with Mighty Buildings' involvement. This standard provides a methodology to evaluate a fabricator's 3D printing process for consistent safety, durability, and code compliance. By being evaluated against UL 3401 by UL Solutions, Mighty Buildings gained a way to demonstrate to authorities that its structures meet critical requirements for fire safety, building envelope, and indoor air quality, forming a strong basis for national and international acceptance.
