Case Study: Bettercoal advances coal supply chain responsibility with UL Solutions

UL provides advisory services to promote continuous improvement of corporate responsibility in the coal supply chain

Bettercoal, a global not-for-profit organization focused on improving responsibility in the coal supply chain, needed support to develop materials that would explain its principles to suppliers and provide tools to assess how well those principles were being implemented. UL Solutions was brought in through its Responsible Sourcing team to help create the framework and supporting documents for this initiative.

UL Solutions developed a suite of operational tools for Bettercoal, including code guidelines for assessors, a quantitative grading matrix, assessment procedures, assessment preparation guidelines, and a supplier self-assessment tool. These resources standardized onsite evaluations, helped coal mine operations understand and apply the Bettercoal Principles, and enabled Bettercoal to track Code implementation across members and over time, improving its ability to report progress to stakeholders.
