A UL Solutions Case Study
The Sugar Association of El Salvador (AAES) worked with UL Solutions to address child labor risks in El Salvador’s sugarcane harvest. The association needed a reliable way to monitor plantations, strengthen prevention efforts, and respond to criticism about children working in the fields.
UL Solutions’ Responsible Sourcing team provided training, education, and ongoing monitoring services, including daily visits to 10% of plantations during the harvest season and weekly reporting to AAES. The program produced measurable results, with the average number of children per monitoring visit falling from 1.4 in 2010-2011 to 0.7 the next harvest and 0.5 in the current harvest, while the number of children working in sugarcane fields dropped 89% between 2002 and 2011.
