Iowa DOT Partners with UL to Test Their Mobile Driver’s License Solution

The Iowa Department of Transportation partnered with UL Solutions as it prepared to launch a mobile driver’s license (mDL) program and needed confidence that the solution would work securely and interoperably. The agency wanted to ensure its mDL would conform to international standards, protect personal data, and function with readers in other states and countries.

UL Solutions provided independent testing and assurance services for the Iowa DOT’s mDL implementation, including functional, integration, performance, conformity, and cybersecurity testing. UL Solutions performed security design and source code reviews, mobile app penetration testing, and assessments of the back-end and administrative network. The result was stronger trust in the Iowa mDL, with the Iowa DOT citing real value from UL Solutions’ work in confirming ISO standard conformance and appropriate security measures for both the agency and its vendor.
