Implementing a World-Class Safety Culture with UL’s EHS Advisory Services

Sarah Cannon, the Cancer Institute of HCA Healthcare, wanted to build a stronger employee safety culture and improve its safety management processes so colleagues could stay safe while caring for patients. To do this, Sarah Cannon engaged UL Solutions and its Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Advisory Services to assess clinical areas, laboratories, and offices, review existing safety programs, and identify gaps in incident reporting, corrective actions, inspections, and standard operating procedures.

UL Solutions recommended a three-phase approach covering assessment, triage, and process improvement. Sarah Cannon implemented a formal incident reporting and management system, introduced near-miss reporting, expanded its EHS team, increased inspections and training, and adopted tools such as PureOHS and predictive analytics; as a result, employee feelings of safety rose 14% in the annual engagement survey, workers’ compensation claims and liabilities fell by 100% over three years, and the organization shifted from a reactive to a proactive safety culture.
