Locatrix deploys mobile applications on Ubuntu

Locatrix Communications, a Brisbane-based developer of mobile location-based applications, needed a reliable platform for Telstra’s social networking service, WhereisEveryone (UandMe), to support a fast-growing mobile community across GSM, 3G, and HSDPA users. To meet the challenge, Locatrix turned to Ubuntu after earlier development on Solaris and other Linux distributions.

Ubuntu provided a secure, lightweight LAMP environment with easy component control, strong hardware detection, and AptGet for simplified software management. With Ubuntu, Locatrix was able to deploy Telstra’s first mobile operator service efficiently, and the result was rapid adoption: the user community grew by thousands each week, with Ubuntu’s stability cited as a key factor in the service’s success.
