Legislators in Kerala, India work better with Ubuntu laptops

The Government of Kerala outfitted 141 members of its legislative assembly with new laptops to increase productivity and collaboration while keeping costs low. Building on the success of its IT@school FOSS initiative, the IT team sought an open-source desktop solution that offered professional-grade productivity applications, guaranteed hardware compatibility and minimal licensing fees.

Working with Canonical partner Zyxware and the Trivandrum Free Software Community, they deployed Ubuntu Desktop (bundled with OpenOffice.org) on Ubuntu-certified laptops and delivered short training sessions. The rollout saved tens of thousands of dollars in licensing, improved security and delivered full-featured productivity tools—results that earned strong positive feedback from legislators.
