Case Study: a government agency restores FIPS smartcard authentication with Ubuntu Support

A Ubuntu Case Study

Preview of the Government Agency Case Study

Government Agency unblocks FIPS rollout for nearly 1,000 systems with Ubuntu

The customer, a government agency, faced a challenge when enabling FIPS mode on their nearly 1,000 Ubuntu systems to meet compliance requirements, as it broke the mandated smartcard authentication they used. The root cause was an upstream change in the OpenSC package between Ubuntu versions that inadvertently broke FIPS compatibility.

Ubuntu's support team provided a hotfix to immediately unblock the customer's FIPS rollout and then coordinated with upstream OpenSC developers to create and backport a universal solution. This resolved the issue for the government agency and ensured the fix would work across all distributions, preventing future problems for other users.
