Case Study: commercetools achieves up to 90% faster rollout of new customer touchpoints with Ubuntu

A Ubuntu Case Study

Preview of the commercetools Case Study

Commercetools uses Ubuntu Server to power its next-generation ecommerce platform

commercetools is a cloud‑native, API‑first ecommerce SaaS/PaaS (part of REWE Group) that uses a headless, microservices architecture to help retailers deliver consistent, omnichannel shopping experiences. The company needed to support rapid innovation, scalability and cost containment for retailers switching between devices and channels, while also maintaining some legacy on‑prem and older Ubuntu 12.04 deployments that were reaching end‑of‑life.

commercetools standardised on Ubuntu across about 300 servers for reliable package management (apt), broad cloud availability and access to Canonical’s Extended Security Maintenance for legacy instances. The change reduced operational risk and infrastructure overhead, freed engineers to focus on product features, and accelerated delivery of new touchpoints—up to 90% faster overall and social media integrations in about 10 minutes—while using containers for stateless services.
