Chicago-based financial services company chooses Ubuntu and cuts server infrastructure by 70 per cent

Equitec Group, LLC, a Chicago-based financial services company, was running mission-critical trading and pricing software on 100 Windows-based servers but was hit by performance problems and high systems-management overhead. The company needed a more efficient, automatable infrastructure that could support its proprietary trading software and existing desktops and hardware, and it chose Ubuntu Server to help reduce total cost of ownership.

Ubuntu implemented a server migration to Ubuntu 8.04 LTS and Ubuntu 8.10, with scripting and centralized management for upgrades, installations, and maintenance, plus a move to Ubuntu’s MySQL database. The results were significant: Equitec completed 90% of the project in four months, cut its server footprint from 100 machines to 30, and achieved a 70% reduction in hardware, space, and power requirements while improving performance and lowering management overhead.
