A Ubuntu Case Study
The Andalusian Regional Government engaged IT services company Isotrol to modernize and connect more than 2,000 schools under the And@red open‑source initiative. Faced with tight public budgets and widely uneven, unconnected school IT, the project aimed to guarantee equitable ICT access, standardize classroom technology and adapt education services to the demands of the knowledge society.
Isotrol deployed 220,000 Ubuntu‑based Guadalinex workstations (serving about 600,000 students and 75,000 teachers), created the centralized Advanced Centre for ICT Schools Management (CGA), and worked with Canonical for ongoing support. The rollout delivered a stable, easy‑to‑manage, hardware‑compatible environment with centralized training and support, improved teacher–student collaboration and more innovative lessons, and reduced management and support costs.
