Evaluating the Role of Telehealth in Caring for Children with Medical Complexity

Advocate Children’s Hospital evaluated how to improve telehealth care for children with medical complexity, a high-need patient population that drives frequent hospital and emergency department use. The hospital wanted a more complete remote encounter than a phone call could provide, and worked with TytoCare using its FDA-cleared telehealth examination platform.

TytoCare provided remote exam kits with multi-function tools including an otoscope, stethoscope, camera, thermometer, and video capabilities, integrated for use in a randomized clinical trial. The device produced clinically acceptable images and sounds, helped support diagnosis and acute care management, and was associated with fewer emergency transfers and lower utilization costs, generating about $7,184 in savings per patient during the study period.
