A Tyler Technologies Case Study
RDW, the Dutch vehicle authority, set out in 2014 to make comprehensive vehicle data available to citizens and businesses to increase transparency, stimulate the mobility supply chain, and encourage new services. The project also had to overcome early pushback on using a cloud-based open data approach and ensure reliable performance under unpredictable, high-volume demand.
RDW partnered with Socrata to launch an automatically updating, cloud-hosted open data portal exposing 14.4 million vehicle records and detailed vehicle-type data via APIs. The platform enabled widespread third-party innovation—insurance and parts‑comparison tools, Rotterdam’s “green zone” emissions checker, and pump-side fraud prevention—while driving usage to roughly 150 million monthly API calls in 2019 (up from 45 million in 2016) and more than 18,000 registered sites and apps, at no incremental cost to RDW.
