How Los Angeles quickly launched a real-time financial dashboard

The Los Angeles Office of the Controller, working with Tyler Technologies’ Munis/Open Finance platform, faced a sudden pandemic-driven demand for clear, timely insight into the city’s $11 billion budget. With plummeting revenues, service cuts, and intense public scrutiny, Controller Ron Galperin needed a way to give residents and policymakers an accessible, trustworthy view of where money was coming from and going to—fast.

In about four weeks the team used the existing open-data foundation to launch "Inside L.A. City Finances," a real-time dashboard that aggregates thematic visualizations and narratives for more than 800 funds and updates daily, bi-weekly, and monthly. The result: a public-facing tool that improves transparency and accountability, helps council members and staff track and target funds, and gives Angelenos clearer, up-to-date information to support recovery decisions.
