A Tyler Technologies Case Study
Mount Airy City Schools (Mount Airy, NC), a 1,700‑student district, faced a major challenge when returning to full in‑person instruction in August 2020: a 40‑year‑old transportation system that relied on pen and paper, caused route delays and long rides, and could not track student seating for COVID contact tracing.
Using state funding for a two‑year pilot, the district implemented Tyler’s Student Transportation suite and Tyler Drive tablets, giving drivers daily route updates, turn‑by‑turn navigation, scan‑card rider tracking, and electronic seating charts. The technology enabled reliable contact tracing, quicker route changes, safer and shorter rides, cost savings from fewer buses, and led to expansion of the solution to 24 additional districts.
