A Tyler Technologies Case Study
The Denton County Justice of the Peace Court faced a rising demand for online access to justice, a need dramatically accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic which prevented litigants from entering the courthouse. Their challenge was to maintain operations and avoid massive case backlogs while providing safe access. To address this, the court worked with vendor Tyler Technologies to implement its Modria online dispute resolution (ODR) service, integrating it with the court's existing Odyssey case management system.
The solution from Tyler Technologies empowered self-represented litigants to participate more actively in their cases online. After implementation, more than two-thirds of the disputes with both parties participating in the ODR process were resolved successfully, often with defendants negotiating settlements lower than the original claim amount. This measurable result helped the court operate safely during the pandemic, prevented significant backlogs, and increased overall access to justice.
