A Tyler Technologies Case Study
Clark County’s Family Mediation Center (FMC) handles mandated mediation for contested child custody cases across Nevada’s largest county, facing heavy caseloads and tight timelines: in 2017 the equivalent of 11 full‑time mediators handled 3,900 mediated cases, leaving little time between initial appointments and court dates to develop parenting plans for complex disputes over legal/physical custody, holidays, vacations and exchanges.
To address this, the FMC piloted Tyler Technologies’ Modria online dispute resolution (ODR) in three family courts. Of 57 referred cases, 19 (33%) had both parties use the system; party‑to‑party negotiations averaged about six days (fastest four), with more than half of participating cases fully resolved online and the remainder already ~47% settled before in‑person mediation. The pilot reduced time and cost for parents, cut mediator involvement, kept resolutions outside court hours, and is being expanded to other courts to improve efficiency and access to justice.
