Buffalo leverages Johns Hopkins and CDC data to inform on its COVID-19 strategy

The City of Buffalo faced a surge of COVID-19 cases in March 2020 and an urgent need to provide residents and staff with reliable, centralized information while transitioning to remote work. Officials also needed to combat misinformation and equip a small data team to produce timely analyses for decision-makers on topics like sheltering, services, and vulnerable populations.

Buffalo implemented Tyler’s Socrata Connected Government Cloud and Socrata open data portal to create a public COVID-19 hub and an internal self-service data platform that links to sources such as Johns Hopkins and the CDC. The solution enabled secure data sharing and real-time collaboration without taxing existing infrastructure, drove deeper cross-team analysis, and logged more than 16,000 page views in its first month while improving transparency and operational decision-making.
