TxDOT Cuts Down the Commute with Traffic Updates via Programmable SMS and Notify

My35 is TxDOT’s traveler-information service for the I‑35 corridor, managed with research and implementation support from the Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI). During an eight‑year, $2.1B reconstruction effort, TTI and TxDOT needed a way to deliver timely, accurate alerts about lane closures, incidents, and construction to thousands of commuters who showed a clear preference for receiving updates via SMS.

TTI implemented Twilio Programmable SMS for personalized, opt‑in text alerts and later adopted Twilio Notify to handle rapid scale. Subscriptions grew from 600 in 24 hours to more than 5,700 (65% daily users), and message delivery time fell from about 20 minutes to under 60 seconds—improving traveler safety, predictability, and overall satisfaction during the reconstruction.
