A Twilio Case Study
The University of Warwick, home to more than 24,000 students and staffed by a web team of 10 developers responsible for over 30 critical systems, needed a more reliable way to deliver secure 2FA, account recovery and user notifications. Their existing SMS provider was inconsistent, and the team required an API that could handle international numbers, fast delivery (messages within 1 minute, 99% within 5 minutes) and future use cases while giving users a choice of communication channels.
After prototyping multiple vendors, Warwick moved all SMS traffic to Twilio (October 2014) for its speed, reliability, international reach and reporting. Twilio now powers 2FA, account recovery and campus notifications; delivery success rates improved noticeably and, in June 2015, of 1,504 successful two-factor verifications, 1,056 (~two‑thirds) used SMS. The team is now building a single notification system so students can choose channels and avoid duplicate messages, creating a more consistent experience.
