Case Study: Wise achieves 90%+ first-login 2FA adoption and stronger account security with Twilio Authy

A Twilio Case Study

Preview of the Wise Case Study

Over 90% of Wise customers adopt Twilio's Authy 2FA security

Wise, the fintech that disrupted international money transfers by offering services up to eight times cheaper than banks and now moves over £1.5 billion monthly for more than 2 million customers, faced a new security challenge as it began holding customer funds with its Borderless accounts. Heightened regulatory requirements (PSD2/SCA), increasingly targeted credential-stuffing attacks, and the friction and weaknesses of SMS and TOTP-based 2FA meant Wise needed a low-friction, transaction-specific authentication method to maintain trust and protect accounts.

Wise integrated Twilio’s Authy push authentication into its app using the Authy SDK in under three months and began prompting customers to upgrade at first login; adoption topped 90% (about 93%) for those prompted. The change made account takeover risk drop to near zero, reduced engineer/operations time spent mitigating attacks, cut SMS-related customer support issues, and improved user trust by giving contextual login details.
