Case Study: Nomorobo blocks 83 million+ robocalls with Twilio

A Twilio Case Study

Preview of the Nomorobo Case Study

Nomorobo put an end to 83 million (and counting) robocalls

Nomorobo is a consumer-focused startup founded by Aaron Foss in October 2013 after he won the FTC’s anti-robocalling challenge. Faced with millions of illegal and unwanted robocalls that the Do Not Call registry couldn’t stop, Foss built a fast, easy-to-use solution on Twilio that earned a $25,000 prize and launched the service.

Nomorobo routes incoming calls via Twilio’s simultaneous ring feature to a special answering point that uses an audio CAPTCHA and pattern-based detection (with a whitelist for legitimate automated calls) to block bots before they reach users. The one-time setup is seamless for callers and recipients, and the service has stopped more than 83 million robocalls while scaling reliably with Twilio’s infrastructure.
