World Central Kitchen (WCK), founded by Chef José Andrés, needed a faster, more flexible way to deliver meals during the COVID-19 pandemic without relying on long lines or centralized distribution sites. As demand for food surged, WCK turned to Twilio to help connect families directly with local restaurants and create a more dignified, on-demand meal ordering process.
Twilio helped World Central Kitchen launch WCK Direct using Twilio Programmable Messaging, Programmable Voice, and Twilio Studio to build SMS and voice ordering flows in under two weeks. The solution expanded from New York City to Chicago and Washington DC, and since July 2020 it has served over 92,000 meals across the three cities, while also supporting local restaurants and improving access for families in need.
