Democracy Works, the nonprofit behind TurboVote, needed a better way to engage voters as mobile traffic grew and email became less effective. Using Twilio Programmable SMS, it built a texting platform to send election reminders, voter registration links, polling-place info, and voter-rights support directly to Americans’ phones.

Twilio helped Democracy Works make SMS a core part of its outreach with a simple setup that a single developer could manage. The results were strong: TurboVote sent 3.5 million texts during the 2016 election peak, reached more than 1 million users in the 2016 presidential election, and helped 62% of those users successfully register and vote.
