Case Study: VERBUND increases battery storage profitability with TWAICE

A TWAICE Case Study

Preview of the Verbund Case Study

How VERBUND increased profitability of battery energy storage systems by incorporating battery aging into its operating strategy

Verbund, an Austrian utility company that operates battery energy storage systems (BESS), faced the challenge of maximizing the long-term profitability of its assets. Different energy trading strategies, such as intraday trading, generated varying revenues but also caused different levels of battery degradation. Verbund needed to incorporate the complex mechanisms of battery aging into its trading algorithms to find the optimal balance between revenue and battery lifetime. They partnered with vendor TWAICE to address this.

TWAICE implemented its Operating Strategy Planner, a predictive analytics tool that models battery degradation for various market scenarios. This allowed Verbund's trading algorithms to account for aging costs, incentivizing decisions that minimized harm to the battery while maximizing revenue. The solution delivered significant results: Verbund expects to extend its storage system lifetime by more than 20%, equating to an additional two years of operation. For a 10MWh system, this translates to an estimated €1.6 million in additional revenue from intraday trading.
